Kibana is an open source visualization tool mainly used to analyze a large volume of logs in the form of line graph, bar graph, pie charts, heatmaps etc.

ELK is one of the popular log management platform used worldwide for log analysis.

Creating Custom Kibana Visualizations

Logstash extracts the logging data or other events from different input sources. It processes the events and later stores it in Elasticsearch. Kibana is a visualization tool, which accesses the logs from Elasticsearch and is able to display to the user in the form of line graph, bar graph, pie charts etc. In this tutorial, we will work closely with Kibana and Elasticsearch and visualize the data in different forms.

In this chapter, let us understand how to work with ELK stack together. To work on data analysis, we can get data from kaggle.

Kibana - Introduction To Elk Stack

We have taken the countries. You can download the csv file and use it. You can also create a dummy csv file and use it. We will be using logstash to dump this data from countriesdata. Start the elasticsearch and Kibana in your terminal and keep it running. We need to specify the path of the input file which in our case is a csv file. The path where the csv file is stored is given to the path field.

Will have the csv component with separator used which in our case is comma, and also the columns available for our csv file. As logstash considers all the data coming in as stringin-case we want any column to be used as integerfloat the same has to be specified using mutate as shown above.

For output, we need to specify where we need to put the data. Here, in our case we are using elasticsearch. The data required to be given to the elasticsearch is the hosts where it is running, we have mentioned it as localhost.

The next field in is index which we have given the name as countries -currentdate. We have to use the same index in Kibana once the data is updated in Elasticsearch. Note that we need to give the path of this config to logstash command in the next step. We have elasticsearch running. Now go to the path where logstash is installed and run following command to upload the data to elasticsearch.

When you first connect to Kibana 4, you will be taken to the Discover page. Here, you can filter through and find specific log messages based on Search Queriesthen narrow the search results to a specific time range with the Time Filter.

If you are not getting any results, be sure that there were logs, that match your search query, generated in the time period specified.

The log messages that are gathered and filtered are dependent on your Logstash and Logstash Forwarder configurations. If you are gathering log messages but not filtering the data into distinct fields, querying against them will be more difficult as you will be unable to query specific fields.

The search provides an easy and powerful way to select a specific subset of log messages. The search syntax is pretty self-explanatory, and allows boolean operators, wildcards, and field filtering.

For example, if you want to find Nginx access logs that were generated by Google Chrome users, you can search for type: "nginx-access" AND agent: "chrome". KY Salt trucks is a bit heavy and is a very specific data set and use case. For now, I think we should remove it as part of the sample data sets packaged with Kibana. As the way we add sample data evolves, it's possible we can bring it back in.

As you may very well know, Kibana currently has almost 20 different visualization types to choose from. This gives you a wide array of options to slice and dice your logs and metrics, and yet there are some cases where you might want to go beyond what is provided in these different visualizations and develop your own kind of visualization.

In the past, extending Kibana with customized visualizations meant building a Kibana plugin, but since version 6. In this article, I'm going to go show some basic examples of how you can use these frameworks to extend Kibana's visualization capabilities. Quoting the official docs, Vega is a "visualization grammar, a declarative language for creating, saving, and sharing interactive visualization designs. Among the supported designs are scales, map projections, data loading and transformation, and more.

Vega-Lite is a lighter version of Vega, providing users with a "concise JSON syntax for rapidly generating visualizations to support analysis. Some visualizations, however, cannot be created with Vega-Lite and we'll show an example below.

For the purpose of this article, we deployed Elasticsearch and Kibana 7. The dataset used for the examples are the web sample logs available for use in Kibana. To use this data, simply go to Kibana's homepage and click the relevant link to install sample data. Like any programming language, Vega and Vega-Lite have a precise syntax to follow. I warmly recommend to those exploring these frameworks to check out the documentation.

For the sake of understanding the basics, though, I'll provide a very simple Vega-Lite configuration that visualizes the number of requests being sent to our Apache server over time. Vega-Lite, of course, can be used for much more than this simple chart. You can actually transform data, play with different layers of data, and plenty more.

Our next example is a bit more advanced — a Sankey chart that displays the flow of requests from their geographic source to their geographic destination. Sankey charts are great for visualizing the flow of data and consists of three main elements: nodes, links, and instructions.

Nodes are the visualization elements at both ends of the flow — in the case of our Apache logs — the source and destination countries for requests. Links are the elements that connect the nodes, helping us visualize the data flow from source to destination.

In the example below, we are using Vega since Vega-Lite does not support the creation of Sankey Charts just yet. Again, I can't go into all the details of the configuration but will outline some of the main high-level components:. You can take a look at it here. Kibana is a fantastic tool for visualizing your logs and metrics and offers a wide array of different visualization types to select from. If you're a Kibana newbie, the provided visualizations will most likely suffice. But more advanced users might be interested in exploring the two frameworks reviewed above as they extend Kibana with further options, opening up a world of visualization goodness with scatter plots, violin plots, sunbursts and a whole lot more.

This is one of the data sets we'd like to add for sample data. This is my first take on the data set itself so open to any feedback. We're using makelogs as the basis here but want to tweak the URL's and requests to be more Elastic-y. Also note that I did not add any tests.

There were a bunch of sample flight data, I'm not sure if they're necessary for other sample data sets. I'll look for nreese here for guidance and can add some in if necessary. Any thoughts on a color schema would be great as well. I'd still like to add annotations to the TSVB chart and better metrics in the table. There needs to be some cleanup, but this is actually a dashboard I use for demo's pretty frequently. More to show off functionality, not necessarily tell a story.

Any input here from PMM would be great, I'd really like to make this data fun. I know that you were also thinking of anomalies to add in.

Note that I made a few changes in the Sample Data Clean Up doc and removed from a few of the field names. Do I need to add them in if there are already some for flight sample data? I'm guessing I do, but thought I'd ask before I write any. I think we should add a test that installs the sample data set, opens the dashboard and makes sure the expected number of panels are opened, and then uninstalls the sample data set.
